This project features a composite deck in an Espresso colorway, built on a pressure-treated structural foundation. 6x6 pressure-treated posts were installed to provide strong, reliable support, while 2x8 joists were spaced at a maximum of 16 inches on center to meet the requirements of the composite decking system. Joist protection tape was applied to help prevent moisture penetration and extend the lifespan of the framing, an especially important detail in wet climates such as Washington. The design includes a two-level layout with a stair system positioned at the end of the upper deck, creating a functional and seamless transition between levels.
Composite decking boards are available in lengths up to 20 feet, and where boards meet, this system requires the use of double joists so each board end can be secured with its own hidden fastener rather than sharing one. This detail helps prevent the board ends from lifting or shifting over time. Installation was completed using CONCEALoc hidden fasteners, creating a clean, seamless surface. A matching fascia was also installed around the perimeter of the deck to provide a polished, finished appearance.
For the railing system, Impression Rail Express by TimberTech was installed. This is a panelized, powder-coated aluminum railing system featuring pre-assembled balusters with hidden fasteners, allowing for efficient installation and a clean, streamlined appearance. It is engineered for durability and long-term performance, making it well-suited to withstand a wide range of weather conditions.
A secondary deck was also constructed on the property, designed as a smaller, standard platform to complement the main structure while providing additional functional outdoor space.
