The project began with the demolition of the existing deck, followed by the construction of a retaining wall to define and support the new paver patio area. Because the original deck featured a step-up in the middle, the new design required a two-tier layout, with a retaining wall installed to manage the elevation change. A proper footing was established first to ensure a stable base for the wall blocks. Once the wall was in place, a layer of gravel was added and thoroughly compacted to the required grade, allowing the pavers to sit flush with the retaining wall. This compaction process is critical, as it provides long-term stability and prevents the pavers from settling or sinking over time.
Pathway preparation involves careful excavation followed by the placement of a compacted gravel base, creating a stable and well-drained foundation for a durable, long-lasting surface.
The paver patio installation began with a charcoal border outlining both the patio and pathway, creating a clean, modern appearance. This border was secured with concrete to help lock the entire paver system in place and maintain long-term stability. The main field was installed using the Summit Blend colorway, which includes a combination of three different paver sizes, requiring a precise pattern layout during installation. Prior to setting the pavers, a layer of bedding sand was carefully spread and leveled to ensure each unit sat flush and evenly, resulting in a smooth, uniform finish.
