A well-crafted cedar fence installed atop a retaining wall can transform the look and function of a landscape. By combining the natural beauty of cedar with the structural confidence of a solid retaining wall, you gain privacy, security, and enduring outdoor appeal. The key is careful planning, precise installation, and attention to drainage and materials.

The project began with pouring a continuous concrete footing from top to bottom to establish a stable foundation across the changing elevation. From there, a retaining wall was constructed using concrete blocks, carefully stepped in a staggered pattern to follow the natural slope of the landscape. This approach ensured both structural integrity and a clean, cohesive appearance that integrates seamlessly with the terrain.

For the fence installation atop the retaining wall, post base brackets were spaced at 5-foot intervals and securely anchored into the wall by drilling and setting bolts with structural epoxy. Pressure-treated 4x4 posts were then installed into the brackets, providing a strong, stable framework designed to support the fence while resisting moisture and long-term wear.

The final phase involved installing the fence using 2x4 cedar framing and premium Grade 1 cedar boards. Due to the significant change in elevation from top to bottom, the fence was constructed in a stepped configuration, allowing each section to follow the slope while maintaining a consistent height and clean, uniform appearance.

An oil-based stain was applied to protect the fence from weather exposure and enhance its longevity. This final finish enriches the natural cedar tones, giving the fence a warm, wet golden appearance while providing durable protection against the elements
